Scripture: 2 Samuel 6:5 (NRSV)
David and all the house of Israel were dancing before the Lord with all their might, here with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.
Thought for the Day: Most of the musicians I know, case especially musicians who improvise, acknowledge that the Spirit works through them when they play. When we’re really into it, music puts us in a trance-like state of worship, where the music is really being played through us rather than by us. Those moments also grace the listener with God’s presence. It’s an incredible feeling that can’t help but move us to sing and dance and clap for joy in recognition of the incredible love of God
We all have God-given abilities that allow us to wonder at the magnificence of creation. We’re not all artists, but whatever we do has the potential to be transcendent. Sometimes, we just need to get out of our own heads and let God work through us, whether we’re clanging cymbals together or crunching numbers in a spreadsheet.
So the next time you’re working and feeling like it’s drudgery, pause a moment to sing a song to God, even if it’s off-tune. Take a break and clang some cymbals together (your co-workers should love this). Stop and do a little dance. Let the Holy Spirit move you to worship, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, so you can find a few moments of bliss even in an otherwise ordinary day. And maybe, like the performer who inspires the listener, you might also inspire someone around you to dance before the Lord with all their might
Prayer: Blissful God of infinite inventiveness, move my soul to dance with joy before you, even if I’m a little uncoordinated. Amen.
