Scripture: Psalm 51: 10 (NIV)
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Thought for the Day: Once when I was applying for a job at a doctor’s office, I was given one of those dreaded personality tests that asked me “Which of these natural occurring objects do you most identify with?”  The one that I chose was “weathered pebble at the bottom of a rushing stream.”  I knew immediately that my reply was definitely NOT what they wanted to hear.

As they prepared to “x” my name off the list (this was a group interview), they asked me to explain in front of everyone why I chose that answer.  I told them that I felt like a weathered pebble because I had been through a lot, but had remained firmly planted even with the issues of life rushing over and around me. They looked surprised at my answer. I got to stay and finish the interview, and actually ended up getting the job. Now, twenty plus years since I identified myself as a weathered pebble, I can safely say that I am a bit more weathered, yet also keenly aware of the spring of life within me that continues to renew and refresh my soul.

I haven’t thought of this camp song in a long time, but it came to mind this morning as I was thinking of God’s spring of life within each of us.

I’ve got a River of Life flowing out of me
Makes the lame to walk and the blind to see
Opens prisoners doors sets the captives free
I’ve got a River of Live flowing out of me

Spring up o’ well
with in my soul
Spring up o’ well
and make me whole
Spring up o’ well
and give to me… That life… ABUNDANTLY!

Prayer: Thank you, God of renewal, for refreshing us with Your spirit and love, especially at times when we feel the most weathered. May our lives spill forth with the power and knowledge of Your abundant love. Amen.
