Scripture: James 1:2-4 (TNIV)
Consider it pure joy, look my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
Thought for the Day: We’ve been called the “instant on” society. We’re used to a world that gives us nearly instant gratification for almost every desire. Want to watch a movie? Hit the Netflix button on any of several electronic devices you probably own. Need some dinner? Call the place that brings food from every restaurant in town. Need to learn something? The Internet is only a click away. Want to lose a few pounds, or put on a little muscle? Take a pill!
There is no instant gratification when we are trying to become mature in our faith. It literally takes years for us to grow from infancy to adulthood, and our spiritual maturity takes real time and effort too. Spiritual growth, like any worthwhile endeavor, takes work. Part of that work is allowing God to work through us, by listening intently for the voice that leads us to a deeper faith and absolute trust in the Creative Eternal. When we persevere, even in the face of a society that urges us to hurry up already, our life’s work is joyous, satisfying, and complete.
Prayer: May the daily work I do always bring me closer to the work you do through me, Holy God. Amen.
