Scripture: John 20:29
Then Jesus told him, ed “Because you have seen me, nurse you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Thought for the Day: I find biblical remarks such as this to be very broad, cosmic statements about our ability to imagine unseen forces in the world—like God, like gravity or magnetism. Think about “believing but not seeing” from a 1st Century CE perspective: The world is primitive. Fire is the primary source of both light and energy. It’s a smoky, dusty place, especially in the cities. Once the Romans arrived, they installed sewer and plumbing systems, which helped somewhat. But this was a gritty, stinky, largely uneducated and illiterate world.
So to believe there was something more to “living” took an enormous amount of faith. Imagine those early scientist/philosophers, who could sense, but not yet prove, that all the big stuff in the universe was composed of really, really small stuff. Amazing.
It takes incredible faith to imagine things unseen, and then a hearty dose of courage to seek answers. And whether we’re searching with the scientific method for the top quark, or seeking relationship with God through prayer and service, we’re on a journey that ultimately ends in absolute amazement at the beauty and intricacy of an incredibly complex universe.
Prayer: Anything I know about you, Holy God, is as a single drop of water in a glass of endless holding. I can’t imagine being the diversity of all diversity, the one yet all. I am humbled by your glory, inspired by your beauty, and moved to tears by your love. And so I keep seeking, still. Amen.
